Special #3 Kombu $4.59 (Regular price $4.99)

Kombu is a kind of sea cabbage, otherwise known as seaweed. It is a natural flavor enhancer that offers huge health benefits for its tiny size. Sea vegetables are one of the most abundant food families on Earth, yet they are surprisingly underused in American cuisine.
Kombu is known for reducing blood cholesterol and hypertension. It is high in iodine, which is essential for thyroid functioning; iron, which helps carry oxygen to the cells; calcium, which builds bones and teeth; as well as vitamins A and C, which support eyes and immunity, respectively.
Kombu has an almost magical ability to render beans more digestible and less gas-producing. But it isn’t magic: Kombu contains enzymes that help break down the raffinose sugars in beans, which are the gas-producing culprits. Once they are broken down, we are able to absorb more of the nutrients, and we can enjoy these legumes without as many intestinal complaints.(http://articles.washingtonpost.com/2013-01-29/lifestyle/36608038_1_kombu-sea-vegetables-soup-season)
How does one use kombu?
● Add a four-inch strip to beans, whether on the stove or in a slow cooker.
● When adding the water or broth to a soup or stew recipe, pop in a four-inch strip of kombu. Once cooked, remove the kombu, chop it up and return it to the pot.
● Add a two-inch strip to a pot of brown rice. Discard when the rice is ready.
● If the cooking time of a recipe is short, soak a strip of kombu in warm water for 20 minutes before adding. Don’t forget to use the soaking water in your recipe, as it, too, is full of minerals.
● Add chopped, soaked kombu to canned soup for added nutrition.

Holistic Health, Organic, fair trade, GMO..what does it all mean anyway??

Holistic Health means having total wellness in your mind, body and spirit.”  Your mind, body and spirit work together to bring you “health wealth.” They cannot truly be separated. When one part of your system is healed, the other parts are positively affected as well. (Lumia-Hlistic-health.com)

Simply stated, Organic produce and other ingredients are grown without the use of pesticides, synthetic fertilizers, sewage sludge, genetically modified organisms, or ionizing radiation. Animals that produce meat, poultry, eggs, and dairy products do not take antibiotics or growth hormones.(organic.com) Organic food is produced by farmers who emphasize the use of renewable resources and the conservation of soil and water to enhance environmental quality for future generations. Organic meat, poultry, eggs, and dairy products come from animals that are given no antibiotics or growth hormones. Organic food is produced without using most conventional pesticides; fertilizers made with synthetic ingredients or sewage sludge; bioengineering; or ionizing radiation. Before a product can be labeled "organic," a Government-approved inspector, inspects the farm where the food is grown to make sure the farmer is following all the rules necessary to meet USDA organic standards. Companies that handle or process organic food before it gets to your local supermarket or restaurant must be certified, too. (The USDA National Organic Program)

Molecular engineers working in laboratories for Monsanto, the giant American biotech company, are gene-splicing vegetable seedlings with poisonous pesticides and herbicides so the plants are inherently protected from the insects and worms that might damage them. The majority of products Americans eat daily contain some form of GMO soy, corn, canola (rapeseed) oil or cotton seed oil. Research shows that consuming the popular herbicide/pesticide Roundup leads to the mutation of cells in the human body, in turn fueling the development of malignant tumors and other various forms of cancer. (Natural News)

Fair trade is an organized social movement and market-based approach that aims to help producers in developing countries to make better trading conditions and promote sustainability. The movement advocates the payment of a higher price to exporters as well as higher social and environmental standards. It focuses in particular on exports from developing countries to developed countries, most notably handicrafts, coffee, cocoa, sugar, tea, bananas, honey, cotton, wine, fresh fruit, chocolate, flowers, and gold. (Wikipedia) The reality is that a lot of the people who provide you with the food and crafts you take for granted live in squalid conditions, with not enough to eat and unable to send their children to school. And this affects mostly women and children. But, with fair trade, they get a fair deal. They are paid a living wage in the context of their country and are able to do the things that we take for granted here in the Western world, like feed and educate their children. Buy fair trade as much as you can…because it really DOES matter.

Tips on purchasing and using apple cider vinegar

Apple cider vinegar is a completely natural product. It is made from apple juice and is fermented to hard apple cider. It is then fermented a second time to apple cider vinegar. When using natural apple cider vinegar, we instantly decrease the consumption of unnatural chemicals in our homes and daily lives.

THE MORE I STUDY ACV THE MORE I LIKE IT.

I initially was researching ways to reduce stomach acid-reflux for my husband and stumbled upon ACV (apple cider vinegar). Here is a recap..
cause...
When stomach PH is low, pathogens may grow around the sphincter found at the top of the stomach and paralyze the muscle, allowing food to be regurgitated – acid reflex / GERD.
conventional treatment...
(antacids,etc.)-only masks the symptoms temporarily..the are the opposite of what you need!!
theory...
If the problem is indeed a lack of acid, antacids and such which further reduce acid, will never cure the problem, but will only provide temporary relief. And indeed, people take these medications indefinitely. Besides taking apple cider vinegar, or another substance that increases stomach acidity, the solution is to switch to a healthy, real food diet.
treatment...
1 teaspoon apple cider vinegar (ACV)-in 8 oz of water, drink thru straw as not expose your teeth to this acidity on a daily basis.

And then I learned ACV can be ysed as a natural holistic remedy for many "dis" ease in the body- By taking this nutritious tonic (ACV and water) you will, at the very least, be helping to reduce the nutrient deficiencies that result from a typical western diet containing many processed, refined foods.

Natural healing Apple cider vinegar kills germs and nourishes the body at the same time, so have a look at some of the many different ways people have been benefiting from the external and internal application of this folk medicine. other claims found during research..
  • weight loss-it has been said drinking 2 oz ACV in even 16oz water throughout the day be supportive of weight management.
  • candida-Apple cider vinegar kills germs and nourishes the body at the same time, so have a look at some of the many different ways people have been benefiting from the external and internal application of this folk medicine.
  • UTI-I had a friend whom used ACV in water and her symptoms subsided in 2 days!
  • If you take ACV between meals or before going to bed, always rinse your mouth to avoid any prolonged vinegar contact with the enamel on your teeth.
  • arthritis, acne, asthma, blood pressure, bone health burns, cancer prevention, cholesterol reduction, colds, constipation, cramps, diabetes and even jelly fish stings!

Shopping Savvy Note- Look for any raw/unpasteurized ACV(which I do sell-but out at the moment) Besides being unpasteurized, it may be unfiltered. In that case, you’ll see something floating around in the bottle. Don’t worry. This is what’s called the mother. It is what causes the vinegar to ferment and isn’t harmful.
Peake's Harmony Wellness will be selling Bragss ACV-non GMO and organic!
